“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

All the colored eggs may have already been gathered and the chocolate devoured, but Easter is not yet over! The Easter season, sometimes referred to as Eastertide, spans the 50 days from the Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday and is celebrated in joy and exultation as one feast day, as one "Great Sunday."

The word Easter comes from Old English and simply means the "East," referring to the sun which rises in the East, bringing light, warmth, and hope.  For Christians, it is symbolic of the rising Christ, who is the true Light of the world. The Paschal Candle, a central symbol of this divine light, is kept near the ambo throughout the Easter season, and is lit for all liturgical celebrations.

As we pass the one year mark of this difficult COVID journey, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel through vaccinations and the easing of restrictions.  How very appropriate that Springtime and the Easter season both bring forth the promise of new beginnings and eternal hope. Alleluia!
