Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

News and Notes

Upcoming Events: A Fall Social at OLA and Confirmation at SMG

Everyone is welcome to the annual Fall Brunch hosted by Angela Siraco and her fellow parishioners at the OLA Church Hall following the 11AM Mass this Sunday, 9/23.  Join us for food and fellowship to celebrate the beginning of a new season and the start-up of Faith Formation for our young families.

Next Sunday September 30, we will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation at the St. Maria Goretti 5PM Mass.  This is the third Sacrament of Initiation (following Baptism and Eucharist) that our eleventh graders will receive.  After the candidates publicly renew their baptismal promises and profess their faith at this Mass, the presiding Bishop Mark O’Connell will extend his hands over the whole group of confirmands and pray for the fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on them.  He will then anoint the forehead of each candidate with consecrated chrism (a blessed mixture of oil and perfume) as he pronounces the words: “Be Sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” There are many graces that flow from Confirmation:

  1. Confirmation affirms and strengthens our baptism;
  2. Confirmation unites us more closely and firmly to Christ;
  3. Confirmation solidifies our membership and bond with the Church;
  4. Confirmation increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us, especially the gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel or right judgment, fortitude, piety or reverence and holy fear in God’s presence;
  5. Confirmation gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend our Catholic faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ in the world.

Another note on the Sacrament of Confirmation---one must receive it in order to be eligible to serve as a godparent for any child or adult who is a candidate for Baptism in the Catholic Church.  Join me in praying for all our teens that will be confirmed next Sunday at SMG and on Sunday October 14 at the OLA 11AM Mass.  Thanks to Pam Guerrieo, our Director of Youth Faith Formation, for her work in preparing our students for this important spiritual milestone in their lives.

Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!
