Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. There are many pretender kings today, many “wannabe” kings that are trying to grab our allegiance, engineer a coup, and bump Christ off his throne. There is the sinister prince of ladder climbing, the wily princess of manipulation, that rebel general named “look out for #1”, and the clever prime minister of addictions.
For Catholic Christians, there is ultimately one King -- only one who should hold sway over our hearts and consciences -- and that is the crucified and risen Lord Jesus. Christ is the only one who rescues us from the power of evil; Christ alone is the Good Shepherd who leads us to the green pastures of paradise; Christ and nobody else will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. His will is unfailingly just and merciful. His teaching is the final word on everything that matters. His rule can never be overthrown. His love for us is everlasting. So, as we receive Christ our King in Holy Communion today, may we resolve to follow him more closely each day!
