In Jesus’ farewell address just before his Ascension into heaven, Jesus breaks the news to his disciples that he would be leaving them very soon. Knowing that his disciples would have a hard time when he vanished from their sight, Jesus wanted to assure them that they would never be alone and so Jesus gives them an incredible parting gift -- none other than the Holy Spirit, the divine Advocate the Father would send to be at the side of Jesus’ disciples, always strengthening them to carry on the mission of the gospel.
My friends, there are times when we can feel like we are left alone to face our own set of challenges and threats. But we Christians believe that we all belong to a worldwide communion of faith called the Church. We believe that we all received the Gift of the Holy Spirit to guide us, to sustain us, to console us along the Way. We believe that we have the wind of the Spirit at our back and that we walk together, care for each other and all our neighbors in need, and serve the common good. Through the grace of baptism, the Spirit of the Lord has taken up residence in the Church, and in our hearts.
